Update : 14 Jan 2015, 05:30 AM

The US and the UK authorities have expressed deep shock and concern over the gun attack on Khaleda Zia's adviser Reaz Rahman.

Reaz Rahman was attacked by unidentified miscreants, who opened four rounds of bullets on him in the city's Gulshan area on Tuesday evening.

Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State Marie Harf condemned the attack and issued a press statement hours after miscreants shot the former foreign secretary in the capital's Gulshan on Tuesday night.

“There is no justification for such outrageous and cowardly acts in a democratic Bangladesh; we condemn the use of violence for political objectives,” said Harf.

The United States urged the government of Bangladesh to investigate the incident and brought the culprits under trial.

In the statement, she said: “We urge all sides to refrain from acts of violence. We call on all parties to exercise restraint and eschew violence and intimidation, and we urge the government to ensure people can freely exercise their right to peaceful political expression.”

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Gibson issued a statement from the British High Commission in Dhaka.

The envoy also expressed his deep sadness and concern at the attack against former secretary of state for foreign affairs Reaz Rahman.

In this statement Robert Gibson also condemn the arson attack on a bus in Rangpur district on Wednesday morning, leaving four people, including a child dead.

He expressed deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. The envoy urged government to investigate these and to bring those responsible to justice.
