PM calls up live to wish Bonna

Update : 13 Jan 2015, 09:44 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was on the phone at a live television programme of Channel I. The programme dubbed 'gane gane shokal shuru' typically has a singer to take requests from viewers.

On Tuesday it was renowned Rabindra Sangeet singer Rezwana Chowdhury Bonna at the guest's chair taking requests.

The programme had begun on schedule at 7:40am when there was a phone call.

A female voice came through the line saying: "Good morning. I want to wish Bonna."

Bonna appeared to realise it was the prime minister herself only after the anchor said: "We have Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with us on the phone."

Sheikh Hasina said: "Happy birthday Bonna! I wish your songs overwhelm the hearts of the people of the country for decades to come."

Visibly overjoyed, Bonna came back with a classic Tagore line: 'hothath alor jholkanite jholmol kore chitto' (roughly translating to 'the sudden flash of light sets the mind and heart alight').

The prime minister wished Bonna well and even more success.

Hasina's younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Bonna's old school mate, was also on the same line. "We are proud of you Bonna apa. I wish you a beautiful life."

"It was beyond my imagination that the prime minister would wish me. I feel so happy that the prime minister watches a music programme so early in the morning," Bonna said in her reaction.

The renowned singer also thanked the prime minister and her sister for wishing her.

The video clip of the program is now available on You Tube.
