Khaleda's Gulshan office unlocked

Update : 08 Jan 2015, 06:14 AM

Police have unlocked the main gate of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office in Dhaka, where she had been confined for five days.

Police opened the lock around 11:50am on Thursday.

However, police and riot vans were still parked in front of the office.

Khaleda had attempted to come out of her office on Monday but she failed. She sat in her car and waited for the police to open the locked gates of her office.

Later, the confined leader announced a non-stop blockade, protesting the police obstacle.

Four sand-laden trucks were parked on either side of the office on Sunday night. Later, restrictions around Khaleda's office were relaxed on Monday night. The sand-laden trucks were also removed.

The BNP chief has been kept confined to her Gulshan party office since Saturday midnight.

However, police authorities and ministers, including the prime minister, denied confining the opposition leader and said the heavy police deployment was in response to Khaleda's request for security.

Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, special assistant to Khaleda, told reporters about the confinement at an instant press briefing at the BNP Gulshan office on Saturday night.

Monirul Islam, joint commissioner at the DMP and also its spokesperson, said at a press briefing on Sunday afternoon that Khaleda Zia was not confined.
