Land dispute kills one in Gaibandha

A man has been killed and twelve others have been injured during a clash over land dispute in Gaibandha.

The deceased is Abu Sayeed Miah, 30, son of Sadek Ali of the village, police said.

The clash took place on Wednesday morning at Nandishahor village under Palashbari upazila of the district.

Of the injured, Bachchu Mia, 48, Chan Miah, 45, Lal Miah, 50, Osman Ali, 30, Harunur Rashid, 32, Mokhlesur Rahman, 40, Abdur Gafur Miah, 50, and Khaleque Miah, 47, were taken to Gaibandha Sadar hospital and Palashbari health complex. Of them, Mokhlesur Rahman condition is critical.

Officer-in-Charge of Palashbari police station Mujibur Rahman said: “There was a long dispute between two groups of the village over grabbing 31 acres of land located in an adjacent canal of the village.”

Quoting locals he said a group led by Shahjahan Miah, Emdadul Haque and Harunur Rashid attempted to capture the land that results in clash between two groups around 10:30am.

On information from the locals, police rushed to the spot immediately and took control over situation, he added.

The corpse was sent to Gaibandha Adhunik Hospital morgue, the OC said.

Additional police, RAB and BGB were deployed in the area, Mujibur said.
