The Officer-in-Charge of Mirzapur police Abdur Rashid, 43, has died of a heart attack, as he tried to stop a hassle over a football match.
Professor Pijush Kanti Sharma of Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur, Tangail, declared him dead at 5pm on Saturday afternoon.
Following the death, police arrested one Kamal Khan, sports secretary of Palli Unnayan Jubak Samiti of Galli in Banail union of the district.
Locals and police said Adabari Sporting Club organised a football match in Adabari Government Primary School playground in Mirzapur upazila in the afternoon.
The match was played between Galli Palli Unnayan Jubak Samiti and Bangshinagar Surjatarun Jubo Sangho, where the local MP Ekabbor Hossain was present, and OC Abdur Rashid was on duty.
At the end of the match, scuffle began between the supporters of the two sides, following an altercation.
The OC led by a police team tried to calm the situation, but he immediately fell sick and fell on a chair beside the MP.
As his situation deteriorated despite locals poured water on his head, he was rushed to the hospital, being recommended by the MP.
Hospital Superintendent Doctor Pradeep Kumar Roy and Pawan Kumar Saha said a medical team led by Professor Pijush Kanti Sharma got ready.
But as soon as he was brought to the hospital bed, he breathed his last, he said.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Shyamal Kumar Datta of Mirzapur police said he joined the police station on October 20 last.
He left his wife, son and daughter. The OC hailed from Kedarpur Petnipara village under Saturia upazila of Manikganj.
At his death, grief engulfed the community including the police members.
