Update : 02 Jan 2015, 07:39 PM

Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain has called for formation of a committee to find out irregularities and corruptions in the country’s Supreme Court.

“The state has lost the sense of humanity. Why? Those who are running the country have become totally isolated from people. They don’t give any importance to what people say,” he said.

“We were proud of the Supreme Court which carries around 150-year old heritage. But, now a days, it is facing various questions. I am requesting the Chief Justice to take immediate steps to find out all irregularities,” he said.

The eminent jurist said he will send a letter to Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain requesting him to take necessary steps in this regard soon.

“I will send a letter to the chief justice requesting him to form an investigation team for finding out all the problems of the court. I will also tell the press what type of answer I get from the chief justice,” he added.

Dr Kamal, also a constitution specialist, was addressing a discussion organised by human rights body Manabadhikar Parjabekkhan Parishad at the National Press Club in the capital yesterday.

Some 10 former chief justices are still alive. The committee should be formed consisting of the former justices, he suggested.

“Our independence and democracy will become valueless, if the people do not get fair trial from the country’s apex court,” he said.

Dr Kamal said: “I will go to the Supreme Court on January 5 to give the letter to the Chief Justice.”

“On that day, a hearing on a contempt of court will be held. I will attend the hearing. In future, I will also attend the hearing on such type of all cases” he said.

On December 2 last year, Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain asked all the heads of various tiers of the lower judiciary to take effective steps to check corruption.

“I take serious note of it. The information relating to corruption of any judicial officer or staff since there is a room for corruption in the judiciary,” he said while addressing a judges’ conference at the SC.

In his speech, the chief justice said he will not take cognisance of any complaint of harassing judges, but he will take the allegation into consideration if it is sound, and such allegation will be investigated by a competent judge.

“If the corruption charge is proved, stern actions will be taken against the judicial officer or employee,” he said.

In it’s reports published in 2013 and 2014, corruption watchdog Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB)  said corruption in Bangladesh’s judiciary is a common phenomenon.

Yesterday, Dr Kamal, one of the framers of the constitution, also said if the judiciary does not function properly, violation of human rights will remain continue in the country.

He urged for an alternative political platform – except Awami League and BNP – to create new leadership.

Pointing to Nagorik Oikkya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and former AL Lawmaker Golam Maula Rony whom were also addressed in the programme, Dr Kamal said: “Both of you [Manna, Rony] could make posters for campaigning for thereformation in politics and leadership.”

“We will provide all cost of the printing and campaigning posters,” he added.
