A speedy trial tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced six people to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing the office assistant of telecom section at Rajarbagh Police Line in 2006.
Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 Judge Shaheed Nur Uddin pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
The death row convicts are Telecom section Accountant of Rajarbagh Police Abdul Latif (absconding), Office Assistant Mohammad Hafizur Hossain (absconding), SAF Superintend of Home Ministry Anwar Hossain Sarkar, Mohammad Wasim, Mohammad Kajol Mia and Babul alias Topon Chokroborty.
The court also finned Tk1 lakh each to the life timers --Samsul Alam and Rajon Mia (absconding). In case of their failure to pay the money, they would have to serve one more year in jail.
The convicts hacked Golam Samsur Haider to death on the street in front of the AGB Colony in Motijheel on September 6, 2006, after the victim came to know about an irregularity of Tk 9,417,187 in which Latif, Hafizur and Anwar were involved.
Later, Samsur's elder brother filed a murder case with Motijheel police.
