Chinese FM arrives

Update : 27 Dec 2014, 02:01 PM

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day visit at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart AH Mahmood Ali aimed at further boosting bilateral relations between the two countries.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali received him at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival around 6:45pm, BSS reported.

During his stay in Dhaka, the Chinese foreign minister is expected to call on President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and senior ministers of the government.

He will hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali on Sunday when the entire gamut of bilateral issues, including trade and Chinese cooperation in Bangladesh's important sectors, is likely to come up for discussion.

The two ministers will also discuss the programmes to be jointly organized to celebrate the 40th anniversary of establishment of Dhaka-Beijing diplomatic relations in 2015 in a befitting manner.

The foreign ministry official said the visit is mainly aimed at reviewing the progress on some memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and letters of exchange inked between the two countries during the official visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to China in June this year.

Two MOUs signed between the two countries during Sheikh Hasina's visit were on cooperation in the establishment of Chinese economic and industrial zone in Bangladesh and the construction of a multi-lane road tunnel under the Karnaphuli river.

Sources however said discussion would be held on reducing the existing trade gap between the two countries during the bilateral talks.

The Chinese foreign minister will leave Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
