The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, protesting the ban in any type of gathering imposed by the district administration, has been passed off peacefully.
The hartal began at 6am and ended at 6pm on Saturday.
The law enforcers dispersed the BNP activists while they were trying to bring out processions around 8am on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Sreepur area.
Later, they vandalised some stationed-vehicles in the area.
However, all kinds of vehicles remained off the streets.
Gazipur Police Super Harun-ur-Rashid said: “Additional five platoon police have been deployed in the area to avoid any kind of untoward situation.”
Gazipur district administration has imposed an indefinite ban on all gatherings from 2pm on Friday until further notice.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was scheduled to hold a meeting at Bhawal Badr-e-Alam College ground on Saturday but Chhatra League also announced a rally on the same venue.
In such a situation section 144 was imposed.
The BNP alleged that the government has imposed section 144 in Gazipur as part of its planned conspiracy to foil the rally.
