A local leader of Jubo League, the youth front of the Awami League, has “mistakenly “ shot a schoolgirl while “cleaning his firearms” in the municipality area on Tuesday.
The victim is Mahima Akhter, 9, a fourth-grader at Sunflower Model Academy of the area.
Mahima's father Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “My daughter was playing with her friends at a field adjacent to our house. Suddenly, we heard that she is crying loudly in pain and rushed there.”
“We found her injured by bullet and admitted at Enam Medical College Hospital around 4:30pm.”
While contacted, the younger sister of Organising Secretary of Jubo League central committee Abu Nasim Pavel, Naznin, told the Dhaka Tribune: “My brother accidentally triggered his licensed pistol while cleaning it. He did not have any bad intention.”
Dhaka Tribune tried to contact Pavel several times. But failed to reach him for his comment over the incident.
Asked if they have any rivalry with the JL leader, Mizanur said: “We do not have any enmity with Pavel and we are yet to be cleared about the reason behind the incident.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police Shafiqul Islam said police had already inspected the place.
“Necessary measures will be taken after investigation.”
