Unscrupulous traders are selling crude fuel oil in Gaibandha after procuring it from Sylhet Gas Field.
They collect the crude oil from the gas field in collusion with its unprincipled officials and employees.
Unrefined oil is sold for Tk40-45 per kg while refined oil is sold for Tk96.49 in the local market.
Professor Jahurul Kayum of Sadullapur Degree College said the unrefined oil is less combustible and seriously harms the environment and suggested not using it.
Our correspondent said there were at least 50 places where unrefined was being sold at seven upazilas in the district.
Hasan Filling Station, situated in Gaibandha Police Lines area, was recently found involved in the sale of the unrefined oil.
Its staffs were selling crude oil at Sadullapur upazila’s Dharmapur Bazar on November 26, when local businesspersons protested it and recovered 60 litters of crude oil from them.
Police soon rushed in and recovered only 15 litters of crude oil, which is now stored in their custody.
Gaibandha Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Rakib Hossain also admitted it and said they had received a general diary about this.
When Hasan Filling Station’s proprietor Litu Mia was asked about the allegation, he denied and called it a plot of his business rivals.
He explained that his rivals were no longer getting customers after the latter had learned that they had been being cheated by them in terms of weight while they are never cheated by him.
