To bring dynamism to administrative activities, the government has launched a free, high-speed Wi-Fi service at the Secretariat.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for the Information and Communication Technology, inaugurated the service in the conference room of the Public Administration Ministry.
Palak said uninterrupted broadband internet through Wi-Fi would speed up administrative work. “Administrative tangles will be eased by the new technology,” he said.
“Administrative activities often get hampered by bureaucratic tangles, but I believe such modern initiatives will gradually reduce those problems.”
The Wi-Fi network was installed as part of Bangladesh Computer Council’s National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government Phase-II project.
“Now, the Secretariat will be connected with the Wi-Fi network round the clock and any one can avail the service in the Secretariat using 506 access points,” Palak said.
Palak informed that over 18,130 government offices were being brought under internet connectivity through fibre optic cable to expedite administrative activities.
The government is also installing facilities for video-conferencing from 800 spots across the country. Also, 24,960 officers will get tablet PC for their use.
“The Tablet PCs would help the officials to connect with the offices round the clock so that they could not shirk their responsibilities,” the state minister added.
Earlier, the government introduced Wi-Fi services in different public universities, including Dhaka University. It also introduced Wi-Fi buses in the capital in April this year.
The government also plans to establish 100,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in different rural areas to provide free internet connectivity with the aim to diminish the information and communication gap between the urban and rural areas, sources at the ICT division said.
