Dhaka University National Model United Nations (DUNMUN), known as the country’s most prestigious Model United Nations (MUN) conference, began yesterday at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.
Organised for the third time in a row, the event is a simulation of the United Nations assemblies offering a ground for the youth to learn and practice the art of diplomacy.
This year, keeping in mind the approaching deadline for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the deliberations of the international community to finalise the next set of sustainable development agenda, the theme has been chosen as “Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development”.
The ceremony, inaugurated by DU VC Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, was attended by Professor Delwar Hossain, International Relations, DU, Chen Shuang, the councilor of Cultural Affairs from the Embassy of China, and Md Moniruzzaman, officer in-charge, United Nations Information Centre.
DUMUNA, as the first MUN club in Bangladesh, has been arranging DUNMUN since 2012. It works for the development of intellectual as well as organisational capacity of the youth by promoting MUN conferences in Bangladesh through voluntarism.
The sessions are going to be held till December 24 with the participation of young students from across the country.
