Policeman 'mistakenly' shoots Hefazat chief Shafi's student

Update : 17 Dec 2014, 05:19 AM

A police constable has been detained after he “mistakenly” opened fire on a student of Hefazat Ameer Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi’s madrasa over a trivial matter on Tuesday night.

Mohabbat Siddique, 22, a first year student of Tafsir at Darul Ulum Moinul Hathazari Madrasa, was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The victim received bullet to his leg, said CMCH Police Outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Jahirul Islam.

Hathazari police station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Salauddin said: “Constable Ruman Siraji engaged in an altercation with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver in front of Hathazari police station over a trifling matter. Hearing the argument, Mohabbat came forward to support the driver.”

“At one stage, they locked into a scuffle and Ruman’s rifle was triggered mistakenly, leaving Mohabbat injured.”

However, the locals claimed that the policeman intentionally opened fire on the student.

Following the incident, agitated madrasa students and mob blocked the joint point of Chittagong-Rangamati and Chittagong-Khagrachhari Highways from 8:15pm to 9:15pm, said police members.

Later, the barricade was removed as the authorities assured them to take measures against the responsible.

Chittagong district’s Hathazari circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) AFM Nizam Uddin told Dhaka Tribune that they already detained the police constable and kept him under the custody of Hathazari police.

“Legislative measures are being processed against him and departmental action would be taken against him,” he said.
