The nation has celebrated the 44th Victory Day with due solemnity and remember those who laid down their lives for the independence of the country.
On this day 43 years ago, the enemy surrendered at the historic Dhaka Racecourse grounds.
The day marks the end of 23 years of injustice which led to the Liberation War that broke out on March 26, 1971.
The day was a public holiday.
Different political parties, socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions observed the day with various programmes.
The programmes of the day heralded with 31-gun salute and raising the national flag on top of all national institutions and wreaths giving at the National Memorial Monument at Savar.
President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Begum Rowshan Ershad in separate messages congratulated the nation on the occasion.
