Truck-human haulier collision kills four

Four people, including a student of Jessore Science and Technology University, were killed after collision between a truck and a human haulier at Abdullahpur Bazar under Jessore Sadar Upazila yesterday. At least 10 people were injured in the accident.

The deceased were identified as Abu Hanif, a third year student of Physical Education department of  Jessore Science and Technology University, Khadija Begum, 50, wife of Maulana Habibur Rahman Bubulbuli, Fakhrul Islam and driver of the human haulier Anisur Rahman.

Of the injured, nine were identified as Sharmin Sultana, Swapna Begum, Khadija Begum, Ratna, Bristy and Jahid Hasan. Quoting witnesses, police said a Jhenaidah-bound truck hit a human haulier which is locally known as Alamsadhu from behind, leaving the three dead on the spot.

Later, Fakhrul Islam died at Jessore Sadar Hospital.

After the accident, driver and helper of the truck fled the scene leaving behind the truck. Then, agitated locals set the truck on fire.

As the news of Jessore Science and Technology University’s student’ death spread, hundreds of students took to the street and put up barricade on Jesoore-Chougacha road. The agitators demanded stoppage of plying of unfit vehicle such as human haulier in the district.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the agitators charging batons in which two students were injured. The injured were taken to Jessore Sadar Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station told the Dhaka Tribune that the situation was under their control.

In another incident, Jaheda Begum, 44, wife of Habibur Rahman Sheikh of Sujapur village in Lohagara upazila of Narail district was killed when she fell from a human hauler on the Jessore-Narail road at Charabhita Jamdia area in Sadar upazila at night.
