Firoza Parvin, last Thursday, set a new national record in the women’s event of the National Weightlifting Championship that concluded with the masters event at National Sports Council gymnasium yesterday.
Meanwhile, this is the first time that the Masters Weightlifting Championship took place in the country where valiant freedom fighter Mujibur Rahman turned out victorious. Mujibur became first in the 65+ year category as he lifted a total of 85 kilogrammes (35 in the snatch and 50 in the jerk event). The 72-year old was honoured with the Bir title for his role in the liberation war.
Bangladesh Ansar weightlifter Firoza lifted 77 kgs in the clean and the jerk category of the 69-kg event to break Rokeya Sultana Sathi’s record. In the previous edition held two years ago, Sathi had lifted 76 kgs.
Firoza lifted a total of 144 kgs, including 67 kgs in the snatch and 77 kgs in the clean and the jerk category.
Ansar emerged as the champions in the women’s event of the tournament while Bangladesh Army finished second. BJMC ended at third position.
Fahima Akter Moyna, who also set a new national record earlier in the tournament, was adjudged the best female weightlifter of the four-day event.
