Update : 11 Dec 2014, 08:43 PM

President Abdul Hamid yesterday urged all to be economical in using electricity keeping in mind the energy security of the future generation.

He also suggested reducing system loss and increasing use of renewable energy by reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

“We must consider the energy security for the future generation. We will have to keep in mind that electricity production is an expensive process which needs a lot of investment,” he told the inaugural ceremony of “National Electricity Week 2014” at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city. He inaugurated the Electricity Week.

Hamid further said: “We must come out of the mentality of using electricity as per our sweet will. We will have to be economical in using electricity thinking about the future generation.”

Terming electricity national resource and an indispensable element for development, Hamid said the increased power production was necessary for the country’s overall development on one hand and the economical use of it is also important on the other.

“With the observance of the Electricity Week, I hope that people will be able to know government activities for the development of the power sector,” the president said.

“You know there has been a change in world politics. Foreign investment is not available as in the past. This is why we have to move forward to achieve prosperity though we have resource constraints.”

Hamid said: “We will have to set up new factories to become a middle-income nation by 2021. The supply of electricity is important to implement the programme ‘Electricity for All.’ I came to know that 24000MW of electricity will be needed by 2021 and 40,000MW by 2030. So, we will have to increase our electricity generation capacity.”

Later, the president visited stalls of the electricity fair on the BICC premises where 97 public and private organisations, including IDCOL, Petrobangla, BERC, Board of Investment are participating.
