Deal inked for 8th Bangladesh-China friendship bridge

A Minutes of Meeting (MoM) was signed yesterday between Bangladesh and China to build the eighth “‘Bangladesh-China friendship bridge” on the river Kocha at Bekutia of Pirojpur.

Secretary of Road Transport and Highways Division MAN Siddique and Economic and Commercial Counsellor of Chinese Embassy in Dhaka Wang Zijian signed the MoM on behalf of their respective sides.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was present at the event. Expressing gratitude, he hoped that China would continue to help develop the infrastructure of the country.

Charge d’Affairs of Chinese Embassy in Dhaka Qu Guang Zhou and senior officials of the RHD were also present.

The 1.48km-long bridge will establish road connectivity between Khulna and Barisal adding to the development of the country.

The cost of the bridge is estimated to be Tk1,000 crore, of which China would provide Tk800 crore while the rest of the money would be ensured by Bangladesh.

The construction work of the bridge is expected to begin in January 2016 after finalising the design, consultant and other details. The bridge is likely to be opened to public in December 2018.
