4 killed in Joypurhat train crash

Four people have been killed and at least 5 others injured being hit by boggies of the oil-tanker train in Shimultali Shaheed Rail Gate area under Panchbibi upazila in the district.

Joypurhat Police Superintendent Abu Kalam Siddique confirmed the deaths of the four to the Dhaka Tribune. 

Two units of fire service and police brought the deceased and the injured to Zila Adhunik Hospital, he said.

Witnesses said when Parbartipur-bound oil-tanker train from Khulna district reached Khasbaguri area under Panchbibi around 5pm on Thursday crossing the Joypurhat railway station, five to six compartments at its back suddenly got detached.

As the guard immediately informed it to the driver over mobile phone, the driver stopped it at Mirshaheed gate in Khasbaguri.

As the detached compartments were moving, those hit the train standing and the people who were sitting in between the lorries fell out at the jerk.

One of these people died on the spot as his body was divided. He was identified as Jewel (14), son of Manik from Jibannagar, Chuadanga.

Hearing the news, the fire brigade rushed to the spot and took the injured quickly. Of the injured, three people died in the hospital.

Two more deceased were identified as Sadequl from the district's Puranpool and Azhar Ali of Khanjanpur area.

However, another was not identified till filing of the report at 8:20pm.
