ACC can work independently, says acting chief

Update : 09 Dec 2014, 06:37 AM

The success in mitigating corruption in recent years proved that the Anti Corruption Commission can work independently, acting chairman of the commission M Shahabuddin has said.

He came up with the remarks while addressing a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday morning. The ACC organised the programme marking the ‘International Anti-Corruption Day 2014’.

Shahabuddin said corruption must be eliminated to build the country as Sonar Bangla, which will be free from poverty and hunger.

Criticising the Transparency International (TI) report that says Bangladesh comes 14th among the most corrupt countries around the world, Shahabuddin said: "We already achieved success on the facts mentioned by the TI in its report."

He said it seems Transparency International is working to implement any quarter's agenda.

Earlier in the morning, the anti-graft body brought out a procession from the ACC head office.

The International Anti-Corruption Day 2014 is being observed in the country on Tuesday as elsewhere in the world, aiming to raise voice against the growing graft.

This year’s theme of the day is: ‘Break the corruption chain’.
