Noted poet Abdul Gafur Sheikh of Narail has been donated Tk5 lakh from the Prime Minister's relief and welfare fund to meet expenses of his medical treatment on Sunday.
Gafur hailed from Baira village under Lohagara upazila in the district.
Cultural Affairs Secretary Ranajit Kumar Biswas handed over the cheque for the money at his secretariat office, state-run news agency BSS reported citing a press release.
Composer of numerous poems and songs, Abdul Gafur Sheikh was termed 'bard' by Pallikabi Jasimuddin at a function.
The cultural affairs ministry has been giving monthly allowance of Tk1,400 to Abdul Gafur Sheikh since 1981.
