It is 41 years, but Lakshmipur has still not been connected with Dhaka by railway.
The authority carried out a study in 1973 whether any railway could be installed in the district with its connection with the capital.
The study found that it is worthwhile to establish a railway in the district but it never made any progress.
Lakshmipur is famous for coconuts, betel nuts, soyabeans and Hilsha. Locals believe that a railway connection could help fetch fair prices for their produce.
On August 27, the district Awami League president wrote to Railway Minister Md Mazibul Hoque about the railway.
The minister instructed the eastern railway zone authority to take up necessary steps about it immediately.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a video conference while inaugurating a passport office in Lakshmipur on August 12, when State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan, and four local MPs also demanded her of establishing a railway in the district.
When asked, MP for Lakshmipur 3 AKM Shahjahan Kamal said: “I brought up this issue in Parliament quite a number of times and even it was discussed at the parliamentary standing meeting, but no rail line is yet to be established here.”
Deputy Commissioner AKM Tipur Sultan said: “I have also presented this issue before the prime minister during the deputy commissioners’ conference with her. The issue is now with the railway minister.”
