'Country to see 1m ICT workforce in 4 years'

The country's ICT sector is likely to see a workforce of one million within the next four years through increase in the number of internet users.

State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Zunaid Ahmed Palak made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled “Asian Governance: Paradox of Development” organised by Bangladesh Policy Research Center at Dhaka University Senate building on Friday.

He said: “By promoting internet to one crore people each year, the government is planning to create a workforce of a million people in the ICT sector in the next four years.”

The government has planned to increase GDP by 1% through the export of information and technology based products, he said adding that he hopes to bring all upazilas and unions under internet coverage within 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Palak said: “With an attempt to amplify ICT based knowledge and earnings, we have trained 15,000 freelancers in the last 10 months and it will be increased to 55,000 within the next two years.”

Chaired by Policy Research Center Chairman Dr Akbar Uddin Ahmed, the seminar was also addressed by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, among others.

Earlier in the programme, Zunaid Ahmed Palak was awarded with “Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury National Award” for his outstanding achievement in the ICT sector. DU VC handed over the crest to Palak.
