Firdausi Qadri named member of UN panel

Bangladeshi scientist Firdausi Qadri has been named a member of a high-level panel of the United Nations that will advise the UN chief on structural transformation and sustainable development using the latest technology in the least developed countries.

On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the formation of the 10-member panel, according to the UN website.

The panel will advise the UN chief on the organisational and operational aspects of a proposed Technology Bank and Science, Technology and Innovation Supporting Mechanism dedicated to the least developed countries (LDCs), it said.

Qadri is now working as the director for the Centre for Vaccine Sciences at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).

Authorities of ICDDR,B, however, told the Dhaka Tribune that they did not get any official statement from the UN about the announcement.

She is now abroad, and scheduled get back to her regular office routine at the ICDDR,B from Sunday next, they said.
