Wild elephants destroyed crops and houses of several village Wednesday evening at Modhonogor in Sunamganj near the Indian border.
Septuagenarian Azizur Hoque of Kandapara village said: “Previously, the elephants used to go back to the forest when the locals lighted torches. But now, they attack when they see fire.”
One Makbul Hossain alleged that the local administration was not taking any steps regarding the matter even though such incidents have been recurring over some time.
Villagers claimed that the elephants destroyed crops on some 30 acres, said Kazi Uddin of Kandapara village.
Union council member Ramzan Ali said: “I have informed the higher authorities regarding the matter several times. But they never responded.”
South Bongshikunda union chairman Jamal Hossain said the elephants went on such rampages because of food scarcity.
