A person has died when a trawler capsized on Maskata river under Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal.
The deceased is Yusuf Ali, 70, from Kashinathpur of Pabna district.
Mehendiganj police station Officer-in-Charge Ujjal Kumar Dey said: “A trawler carrying more than 50 passengers collided with a launch called Beauty of Ima, carrying some 150 passengers, and capsized around 1am on Wednesday.”
“The passengers of both the vessels going to Charmonai to attend a three-day long sermons,” he said.
Abul Bashar Majumdar, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Barisal office, said both the trawler and launch were running without any search light and prior permissions from the authority.
Although officially no passenger was reported missing but the locals claimed four passengers went missing in the incident.
The OC said the body will send to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College for autopsy.
