Hefazat: Decision on hartal in evening

Update : 25 Nov 2014, 09:37 AM

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is set to fix its next course of action over the Latif Siddique issue after a central committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Azizul Haq Islamabadi, organising secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, endorsed the information to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “Hefazat-e-Islam will decide on hartal and further move on the issue after a central committee meeting in the evening.”

Earlier, the Islamist outfit warned to enforce a nationwide shutdown for Thursday, if the government does not arrest former minister Abdul Latif Siddique by Wednesday.

The decision was taken at the central committee meeting of the Islamic platform at Hathazai of Chittagong on Monday afternoon, hours after Latif returned home on Sunday night.

A total of four arrest warrants have so far been issued by different Dhaka courts against Latif Siddique for hurting the countrymen’s religious sentiment by making controversial remarks on Hajj and Tablig last month during a programme in New York.

Later on Tuesday afternoon, the former minister was arrested after he surrendered before Dhanmondi police station in the capital.

The former minister was produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman around 2:25pm.

Later, the court sent him to jail.
