Court orders OC to arrest Latif Siddique

Update : 24 Nov 2014, 07:00 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday directed the officer-in-charge of Ramna police to arrest sacked Awami League minister Abdul Latif Siddique in a case filed for hurting religious sentiments of the Muslims.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqur Rahman passed the order following a petition filed by Abed Raja, complainant of the case.

Latif retuned to Dhaka on Sunday evening.

On October 28, the court issued a warrant of arrest against lawmaker Latif as he did not appear before the court despite being summoned.

Pro-BNP lawyer Abed Raja filed the case on October 2 with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

Six other cases have been filed with the same court against Latif for his remarks made on September 28 during a meeting in New York.

A number of cases have been filed with different courts across the country and most of the courts issued arrest warrants against Latif.

The cases say the former minister made derogatory comments on Hajj, Prophet Muhammad (SM), Tabligh Jamaat and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

In the wake of his comments, Latif was fired from the cabinet on October 12. Moreover, the Awami League Central Working Committee expelled him from the party’s Presidium body while his primary membership was also scrapped.
