Remittance from Middle East falls 23%

Remittance inflow from middle-eastern countries fell 23.38% in October due to restriction on manpower recruitment from Bangladesh.

The country received remittance of $599 million in October from Middle East countries compared to $782 million in previous month, according to the central bank data released yesterday.

The remittance inflow from middle-eastern countries has fallen for one and a half years.

The total remittance declined by 8.33% to $8.40 billion in the fiscal year of 2013-14 compared to $9.16 billion in the previous fiscal year.

The country experienced a 10% rise in remittance inflow from Middle East in the fiscal year of 2012-13 compared to $8.3 billion in the previous fiscal year.

The remittance inflow from Europe increased 10% in the fiscal year of 2013-14 compared to the previous fiscal year.

It, however, dropped by 25% to $419 million in October compared to $561.99 million in the previous month as the overall remittance declined.

The total remittance dropped by 24% in October compared to the previous month.

Wage earners sent home $1bn in October compared to $1.3bn in September.

As Eid ul-Azha was held in the first week of October, the previous month saw higher receipt from expatriates.

Manpower export from Bangladesh has significantly declined as no new job market was created overseas in more than a year, said a senior executive of Bangladesh Bank.

Moreover, many of major manpower recruitment countries continued restricting their recruitment from Bangladesh.

The major countries to recruit manpower from Bangladesh are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Oman and Singapore, of which, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Oman have imposed restrictions on recruitment from Bangladesh.

According to reports of Bangladesh embassies there, illegal activities including murder and theft and overstaying their visas by Bangladeshi migrant workers have tarnished the image of the country.

The situation has brought sufferings to many Bangladeshi aspirants.
