Bangladeshi shot dead on Sylhet border

A Bangladeshi day labourer has been shot dead by an Indian Khasia on Guabari border under Jointapur upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased is Kudrat, 30, son of Asad Ali, of the upazila.

10-year-old girl killed after rape in capital

A 10-year-old hearing-impaired girl has been strangled by unidentified miscreants after rape in the capital's Islambagh area on Friday night.

The deceased is Moni Akhter, 10, daughter of one Chan Mia.

Latin America applauds Obama's immigration plan

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto praised US President Barack Obama on Friday for his executive orders granting new rights to millions of people living illegally in the United States, calling it "an act of justice."

Mexicans are believed to account for more than half of the roughly 11.2 million migrants living in the US without authorization. Mexico had long pressed for better conditions for them.

Canadian vets plan to join Kurdish fight against IS

Several former Canadian soldiers plan to join Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State militants in coming weeks, with at least one already in Iraq, Canadian media reported on Friday, bolstering the ranks of foreigners fighting alongside the Kurds.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said a half-dozen former armed forces personnel were enlisting, citing unnamed sources.

Stop punitive home demolitions, HRW urges Israel

Israel should impose an immediate moratorium on its policy of demolishing the family homes of Palestinians suspected of carrying out attacks on Israelis, suggested Human Rights Watch (HRW).

In a statement issued on Saturday, the human rights watchdog said the policy, which Israeli officials claim is a deterrent, deliberately and unlawfully punishes people not accused of any wrongdoing.

One killed in Gazipur road accident

A person has been killed and three others have been injured when a passenger bus ran a three-wheeler over at Tan area under Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur.

The deceased is Fazal Mia, 30, driver of the three-wheeler and son of Kazi Nizam Uddin, of Kurigram.

DMP to install retractable spikes on city roads

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to install retractable spikes again on Captain Monsur Ali Sarani, in front of DMP headquarters, on Saturday, said a DMP press release.

According to the press note, the traffic division of the DMP will install 'protirodh', a modern device, to prevent plying of vehicles from wrong directions.

Police: Al-Shabab militants kill 28 in Kenya bus

Police officials say al-Shabab militants from Somalia have hijacked a bus in northern Kenya and killed 28 non-Muslims on board.

The two police officers said Saturday that the bus traveling to the capital Nairobi was hijacked 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Mandera town. The officers say the gunmen singled out non-Muslims and shot them dead.

Flower shops evicted in Shahbagh

The authorities of Dhaka City Corporation (South) have evicted all the flower shops, occupying the footpath at Shahbagh intersection on Saturday morning.

The DCC (South) and Shahbagh police jointly started eviction drive around 11am, said witnesses.
