Gas supply disrupted in Tangail as pipeline explodes

Update : 21 Nov 2014, 08:10 PM

Gas supply in Tangail district was severely disrupted as a pipe line at Elenga in Kalihati upazila exploded yesterday morning.

The pipe line of Town Valve Station at Elenga suddenly erupted causing gas leak and suspending the gay supply from Elenga to Gazipur’s Kaliakoir area, Barun Babu, deputy manager of Tangail Titas Gas Transmission Company told the Dhaka Tribune.

As a result, residents, gas stations and other establishments faced sufferings throughout the day.

CNG-run vehicles could not operate due to shortage of gas. Akter, an auto-rickshaw driver, said he had to wait at a refuelling station for hours but without any success. “I cannot run my vehicle as there is no gas. This also means no income for me today,” he said.

Owner of a gas station Abdul Kayyum said: “We cannot refuel the vehicles as there is no gas supply. This is hurting our business.”

Meanwhile, residents of the district could not prepare food at home due to the disruption. Many people had to buy food from restaurants.

Rikta Akter, resident of Shibnath Para of Tangail town, said gas supply came to a halt at around noon, when most of the families were preparing lunch on the first day of the weekend.

Deputy Manager Barun Babu said they were working on bringing an expert from Dhaka to fix the damaged pipe line.

The repair work was still going on when this report was filed at 6pm.
