A student of a private university has been killed in a factional clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit over establishing supremacy on the campus.
At least nine people were injured in the clash. Their identities could not be known yet.
The deceased is Sumon Roy, a third year LLB student of Sylhet International University, said Jalalabad police station Officer-in-Charge Akter Hossain.
The SUST authorities have declared the university closed for indefinite period, following the clash.
The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting of the university on Thursday afternoon.
SUST syndicate member Associate Professor Dr Faruk Uddin confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the closure.
Male students have been asked to vacate dormitories by 4pm on Thursday and female students by 9am on Friday.
On condition of anonymity, students said there was a previous enmity between SUST BCL President Sanjib Chakrabarti Parthan and its Vice-President Anjan Ray.
Following the feud, the supporters of both the groups locked into the clash around 10:30am on Thursday, leaving nine injured.
Of the injured, two were admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet.
Akter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station, said: “Police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control.”
Additional police forces were deployed on the campus area to avert further untoward incident, he said.
The OC said university Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan and senior teachers were trying to cool the BCL men.
Till filing of this report at 3pm, the clash was underway, says our Sylhet correspondent from the campus.
