Update : 19 Nov 2014, 07:12 AM

Detective Branch (DB) of Police have detained five people, including the deputy general manager of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, for their alleged involvement with gold smuggling.

The detainees are Biman DGM Emdad Hossain, Captain Abu Mohammmad Aslam Shahid, Manager Mohammad Mozzamel Hossain, Farhan Money Exchange owner Harun-Ur-Rashid and contractor Polash.

DMP Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman (media and public relations) said: “A team of DB police detained them from Uttara and Bashundhara area on Tuesday night.”

“They are being interrogated and will be produced in the court with a remand plea. Names of many cabin crew and Biman officials involved in gold smuggling have been found during the questioning,” he said.

“They will all be brought under law irrespective of their position once we are assured of their involvement,” the official said.

Masudur Rahman said they have been detained in a specific case but they will be shown arrest in other smuggling cases also if their involvement is found in those cases.

“The detainees had made a blue print for that day [November 12] which clearly defined their role and actions for the smuggling,” he added.

He said Dubai expatriate Shofiul Azam Minto had invested in the gold that had been smuggled into the country.
