CUTA demands arrest of RU Prof Shafiul’s killers

Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (CUTA) has demanded immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to the killers of Rajshahi University Professor AKM Shafiul Islam.

CUTA came up with the demand at a human chain programme held on the campus on Tuesday, protesting the killing of Rajshahi University teacher.

Around 150 teachers wearing black badge formed the human chain at Shaheed Minar premises on the campus around 11:30am.

CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Anwarul Azim Arif and Pro VC Professor Dr Ifekhar Uddin Chowdhury were present at the protest programme.

CU VC said: “The anti liberation forces repeatedly carried out such brutal attacks on progressive teachers to create an intellectual vacuum in the country in a similar way during 1971 liberation war.”

Three teachers of RU were killed in last ten years and the trend is still on as there was no exemplary punishment so far was awarded to the killers, CU Pro VC Dr Iftekhar said.

The speakers demanded arrest of and exemplary punishment to the culprits who killed Professor AKM Safiul Alam.

The teachers brought out a silent procession which paraded different areas on the campus after holding the human chain.

CUTA Vice President Professor Dr Rased-Un-Nabi presided over the rally where CUTA President Professor Benu Kumar Dey, General Secretary Prof Mustafizur Rahaman, deans of the faculties, among others, also attended the protest programme.
