Bangladesh Navy has detained more than 600 people while being trafficked to Malaysia.
The navy detained them by chasing down a trawler near Saint Martin Island around 12pm Monday, ISPR Assistant Director (Navy wing) Syeda Tapashi Rabeya Lopa told the Dhaka Tribune.
The navy official also said some 625 people who were being trafficked to Malaysia in the trawler of Myanmar. The detainees, including both women and men, were being brought to Chittagong from Saint Martin island till filing the report.
Syeda Tapashi Rabeya said there would be a briefing on the Navy's behalf in this regard on Wednesday morning.
Earlier on June 11 this year, in the Bay of Bengal near the St Martin’s Island, at least six people were killed and 140 others injured, of them 27 hit by bullets, when armed traffickers fired on a trawler carrying illegal Malaysia-bound passengers.
