HC: Stop construction along Kaliganga river

The High Court has ordered relevant parties to ensure within three days that construction along the Kaliganga river is stopped.

The ruling also asked the government to explain to why it should not be ordered to remove illegal structures of Akij Particle Board Mill on the banks of Kaliganga river in Manikganj.

A bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal issued the rule following a public interest litigation by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

Secretaries of LGRD and Environment Ministries, director general and director of Environment Department, chairman of BIWTA, deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and additional deputy commissioner in Manikganj, upazila nirbahi officer and officer-in-charge of Ghior police station; and general manager of Akij Particle Board Mill have been made respondents.

The respondents have been asked to submit their explanation within two weeks.
