Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman has been awarded GUSI Peace Prize International 2014 for his work in the field of economics focusing on the welfare of poor people, said a press release of the central bank yesterday.
The governor will receive the award on November 26, 2014 at a ceremony in Manila, Philippines, where 14 other eminent personalities from Austria, China, Congo, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Nepal, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland and Saudi Arabia will also receive award for their exemplary contributions toward peace and welfare in their respective fields, according to the release.
Founder and Secretary General of Development Organization of the Rural Poor (DORP), AHM Nouman, won the Gusi Peace Prize International Award in 2013 for his contribution to poverty alleviation and humanitarianism from Bangladesh.
The Gusi Peace Prize foundation has termed Atiur Rahman “the Poor Man’s Economist” in the award citation.
Dr Atiur Rahman is the recipient of a number of other international awards including the Indira Ghandhi Gold Plaque for his contributions to international cooperation on human progress.
GUSI Peace foundation introduced the peace award in the name of Javier Gusi who was a participant of Guerrilla war against Japan in the second world war.
Later, Gusi had been involved with Philippine politics and became popular as a human rights activist.
The peace award is given away in November every year to the winners through a ceremony.
