Residents in Faridpur yesterday rejoiced at the death sentence awarded to fugitive war criminal MA Zahid Hossain Khokon, infamously known as Khokon Razakar.
Locals distributed sweets and marched through Nagarkanda and Saltha areas soon after the International Crimes Tribunal handed down the verdict.
Chairman of Shahid Nagar upazila Rafiquzzaman Onu said Khokon would always feel proud to identify himself as a Razakar.
“People have breathed a sigh of relief as the verdict has been pronounced,” he said.
Faridpur Muktijoddha Sangsad Commander Abul Fayez Shah Newaz said one of the four notorious men in the district had been condemned to death. He also called on the government to implement the other verdicts soon.
Acting general secretary of Faridpur district unit of Awami League and freedom fighter Syed Masud Hossain termed Khokon’s verdict “the verdict of people and freedom fighters”.
Sub-sector Commander during the 1971 Liberation War and an accused in the Agartala conspiracy case Nur Mohammad Babul said the verdict had destigmatized Faridpur.
Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad Commander Fazlul Haque said the verdict reflected justice and demanded it be executed soon.
Nagarkanda Awami League President Abdul Raihan Mia said the local people were pleased with the death sentence of Khokon.
