Update : 14 Nov 2014, 05:56 AM

Eminent educator Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui was laid to rest at Banani graveyard yesterday afternoon after mourners paid tribute to him at the Central Shaheed Minar.

Around 11am, his body was brought to the Shaheed Minar where people from various political, social and cultural organisations had been waiting to pay their last respects.

Mourners gathered around the body and laid floral wreaths as a token of respect.

As one of the country’s prolific intellectuals, Prof Zillur left his contributions in the fields of literature and culture, and also at the state level.

Delegations of political parties including the Awami League, BNP and Communist Party paid tribute to Zillur. Officials of different ministries, teachers of universities and members of cultural organisations also paid their respects.

CPB leader Mujahidul Islam Selim said the educator’s ideas would be more meaningful if the youth carried it further.   Ruling party lawmaker Jahangir Kabir Nanok said his death was a great loss.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique said the loss of people like Zillur Rahman would always be deemed as an untimely demise. “Many a time we met in different occasions. His mastery was to grasp any situation and deliver his insights in the most precise manner.”

After observing a minute’s silence as respect to the departed, Zillur’s body was taken to the Dhaka University Mosque and then to Gulshan Azad Mosque for namaz-e-janazas after which he was buried at the Banani graveyard.   Earlier, his first janaza took place at Jahangirnagar University premises where he was a vice-chancellor. Students and teachers paid their respects laying floral wreaths.
