Indefinite transport strike underway in Sylhet

An indefinite transport strike called by Bangladesh Road Transport Owner’s and Worker’s Federation, is underway in four districts of Sylhet division.

The Sylhet divisional unit of the federation is observing the strike in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj to press home its seven points demand.

The strike began at 6am on Tuesday and will continue indefinite period.

No long route buses were seen plying on roads during the strike.

However, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and auto-tempos will ply during the strike, Auto-Rickshaw Workers Unity President Md Jakaria said.

The federation's divisional Secretary Selim Ahmed Folik said they have called the strike demanding decreasing corruption of BRTA office; setting up grill at CNG-run auto-rickshaws; rebuilding rundown of Sylhet-Tamabil road and mitigation transport related cases in Sylhet instead of Sayestaganj, Habiganj.

Zedan al-Musa, additional deputy commissioner of the Sylhet Metropoliton Police said, the strike was being observed peacefully.

"Additional police forces have been deployed in different points to avert any untoward incident," he added.
