A faction of agitating vessel workers has called off indefinite strike after a meeting with senior police officers at the Chittagong port.
However, another faction also made a call to observe the strike demanding security on the waterways.
Shahadat Hossain, general secretary of Lighter Vessel Workers' Union, said: “Workers will keep working at the port.”
But Shah Alam, Nouzan Workers’ Federation general secretary told the Dhaka Tribune: “No authority has sat with us. So, the strike will continue until our demands are met.”
Loading and unloading activities in the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port remained suspended since Saturday morning following the strike.
However, operations in jetty and yard are normal.
Nabi Alam, general secretary of Lighter Vessel Workers' Union, told the Dhaka Tribune that workers stopped working since Saturday morning following the robbery on a lighter vessel in Lakshmipur on Friday night.
