Update : 09 Nov 2014, 09:10 AM

Forty seven people, including 17 police officials, have been injured in a chase and counter chase between law enforcers and BNP supporters in Gazipur.

They locked into a chase and counter chase with each other when the police barred the BNP members from bringing out a protest rally around 12:15pm on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, police detained four people from the spot.

Gazipur district BNP Advisor Advocate Shahiduzzaman said: “We were staging a peaceful protest as a part of the central BNP's programme when the police charged batons and fired bullets at us.”

“Around 30 BNP members have been injured in this incident. They have been admitted to different hospitals,” he said.

Joydebpur police station Officer-in-Charge Khondokar Rezaul Karim Reza said: “They blocked the Bhawal-Rajbari road and were staging a procession that hampered the vehicular movement on the road.

“In spite of asking them to move repeatedly, they did not listen. They tried to vandalise vehicles and hurled bricks and bats at the police officials, leaving 17 of the law enforcers injured.”

He said: “We fired 20 rounds of rubber bullets and three rounds of tear shells to bring the situation under control.”
