17 policemen injured in Sylhet clash

Seventeen police members have been injured during a clash between villagers and police at Virkuli village under Goainghat upazila early Saturday.

Five villagers were also detained in this connection.

Locals said a tense situation was prevailing in the area following the clash.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hye of Goainghat police station said: "Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Abdul Monaf, who is an accused of 13 cases including murder, rape and extortion, from Virkuli village around 3am."

He added Monaf's associates attacked on police convoy while they were returning to the police station that triggered a clash. "Seventeen police members including Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Ruhul Amin were injured in the clash."

Police charged batons and fired 74 rounds of blank shots to control the situation.

However, Monaf managed to flee.

Additional police force were deployed in the area, said the OC.

Kairul Basar, sub-inspector of Salutikor police investigation centre, lodged a case with Goainghat police station following the assault on police. Over 150 people including Abdul Monaf were made accused in the case.
