Admission seekers demand punishment of attackers

Update : 08 Nov 2014, 06:02 AM

Condemning Friday's attack, the demonstrating admission seekers have demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers.

They came up with the demand while staging their pre-announced programme in protest against the attack allegedly by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.

The incident took place when the protesters were participating in a human chain in front of the Raju Memorial around 11:20am on Friday to protest against the university authorities’ decision to bar applicants from taking the admission test twice.

Despite the attack, the protesting students continued Friday’s demonstration until 4pm and announced to hold today's demonstration rally at the same venue this morning.

They also said they would submit a memorandum regarding their demands to the university’s chancellor.

Mohammad Hossain, one of the protesting students, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The attackers, introducing themselves as BCL members, beat us up and tried to foil our peaceful programme. We want their punishment and they also should be arrested immediately.”

The protesting students also claimed that the attackers were activists of Chhatra League’s unit in the university’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and they launched the attack as per the order of the DU authorities.

While contacted, DU acting proctor Amzad Ali, said: “The university authorities do not know anything about the attackers. Our students cannot attack them.”

“We have asked them several times that such demonstration will not influence our decision. But, they are continuing protest without getting the permission of the authorities.”

He further hinted that Friday's incident could be the internal matter of the demonstators.
