Update : 07 Nov 2014, 05:43 AM

Mountaineer Wasfia Nazreen, the second Bangladeshi woman who conquered Mount Everest, has been selected as one of the National Geographic Adventurers of the Year.

Every year National Geographic honours ten individuals from around the world under different categories.

The information was disclosed on the website of the National Geographic on Friday.

According to the website, she has been selected for her activism and commitment to empower women through her work in the field of adventure.

The mountaineer, who is also an aid worker, wrote to the Dhaka Tribune on Friday night and informed: “I have already been honored with the Adv of the Year award which ten individuals get every year.”

For a decade, National Geographic has spun the globe to find the Adventurers of the Year, each selected for his or her remarkable achievement in exploration, adventure sports, conservation, and humanitarianism.

It also has a second award called the People's Choice Award where one can vote every day for each of the ten individuals. Names of winners will be announced in February 2015.

Wasfia is the first Bangladeshi to scale the Mount Denali, the highest mountain of North America.

In 2011, Wasfia, who is also a writer, had taken up the challenge of climbing the highest mountains of each of the seven continents in celebration of 40 years of independence of Bangladesh and women progress.

She has successfully completed six continents.
