The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology Ministry said the ministry must hasten the construction work of the country’s first nuclear power plant at Rooppur of Pabna , at a meeting held at the parliament building headed by its Chairman AFM Ruhal Haque.
So far, around 90% work of the first phase of the project and 60% of the second phase have been completed.
The committee members in a meeting yesterday also hoped that the 2000MW plant’s main construction work would begin next year to meet the ever increasing demand of electricity.
The watchdog also said to build the power station properly, an experienced agency should be appointed. The government hopes to complete the plant by 2020 with a view to starting supply of power to the national grid by the following year.
Russia is providing technical and financial support to build the plant and has promised to install the latest and safest type of nuclear reactor. It will also provide 90% of the construction cost that ranges between Tk12,000 crore and Tk15,000 crore.
