New envoy: European Union not opposing war crimes tribunal

Update : 05 Nov 2014, 06:40 PM

The European Union does not oppose the trial process of the war crimes tribunal but it is against any death penalty, the newly appointed EU ambassador to Bangladesh said yesterday.

“We have objection to death penalty worldwide in whatever reason, whatever time and whatever person.

“The EU opposes death penalty in any country in the world including the United States,” said Mayaudon Pierre at a press briefing at a city hotel.

He was responding to a question when asked as to why EU issued statements only after announcement of death penalties involving war criminals.

“The issue is not the ICT related and we don’t have any objection to ICT,” he said adding that European Union condemns any death penalty anywhere in the world.

“Please don’t spread this perception that the EU is against war crimes tribunal,” he told the reporters.

He said whenever they were informed about any death penalty they issued press statement.

The EU delegation to Bangladesh issued a statement on October 29 after the death penalty for Jamaat top leader Motiur Rahman Nizami was announced.

The statement urged the Bangladeshi authorities to commute the sentence and to introduce a moratorium on execution as a first step towards definitive abolition of capital punishment.
