A missionary school has been come under attack by some locals following a spreading rumour that authorities of the school were trying to convert its Muslim students into Christianity at Konabari Ambag area in Gazipur.
The school's at least 10 employees, including some teachers, were injured in the incident on Wednesday.
Police said they arrested five people for their alleged involvement in the attack.
The arrested are Faruk Hossain, 42, Rahman Kalu,40, Amzad Hossain, 37, Babu, 24 and Alamin,18.
Witnesses said more than 100 people attacked the Stiv Kim Mission School with sticks, rods and other locally made weapons hearing a rumour that Muslim students were being converted into Christianity at the school around 10:00am.
They attackers vandalized the school's furniture and beaten up ten of its employees including teachers, said Michel Mondol, a director of the school.
The injured are Sheoly Hawlader, Sunil Mondol, Bistoo, Narayan, John, Sheoly Mondol and Sumitra, he said.
Claiming that there was no activities of converting students to Christian, Michel Mondol said: “It’s a rumour only.”
The school was established in April in this year. Students are provided with free books, notebook, dresses, pen and meals, he said.
The process of filing a case was underway till this report was written 7:36pm, said Sayeed Azharul Islam, a sub-inspector at Konabari police out post under Joydebpur police station.
