Holy Ashura observed

The holy Ashura was observed in the country and elsewhere in the Muslim world with due religious solemnity.

Different religious organisations have chalked out various programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasions paying deep respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala.Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, private TV channels and private radio stations aired special programmes while newspapers published supplements highlighting the significance of the day.

The day was a public holiday.

The holy Ashura is observed on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate the Karbala tragedy in which Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM), along with his family members and followers embraced martyrdom.

On this day, 10th Muharram in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) along with his family members and close relations were entrapped by Yazid's forces and later embraced martyrdom in Karbala after battling for long hours.

About 1332 years back, Imam Hossain (RA) had to make supreme sacrifice to uphold the spirit of Islam and the teachings of the Great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
